| HURRIYET -- A NIGHT OF LAND-MINES As Turkish Parliament began debating a law about sweeping of land-mines in border region with Syria, six troops were killed and six others were injured when a remote-control road-side land-mine planted by PKK terrorists in Cukurca town exploded. A large-scale operation is under way in the region to capture PKK terrorists.
-- F-16 JETS STRIKE PKK TERRORISTS IN NORTHERN IRAQ Turkish military said that F-16 warplanes attacked PKK terrorists in northern Iraq. The military said that the jets targeted and hit a crowded group of terrorists in the Iraqi border region of Avasin-Basyan.
MILLIYET -- RETAIL SUMMIT IN CANNES Leading names of the Turkish retail sector will gather in Cannes, France for the 4th Retail Leaders' Conference. The conference, which will end on May 31, will focus on new initiatives for the retail sector and business world. The Retail Leaders' Conference, which took place in Zurich, Lisbon and Berlin in previous years, makes very important contributions to the sector as one of the most prestigious organizations not only for the sector but also for Turkey.
-- 6 SOLDIERS DIE IN MINE BLAST Six Turkish soldiers were killed in a mine blast in Cukurca town of south-eastern province of Hakkari. The blast occurred when a military vehicle carrying soldiers ran over a land-mine planted by terrorist organization PKK. Soldiers Ziya Bener, Ozkan Dumlu, Deniz Demirci, Cafer Celik, Kemal Ozevin and Adil Yildiz died in the road-side bomb blast.
SABAH --A LAND-MINE TARGETING PEACE While Ankara concentrated on efforts to find a solution to the Kurdish issue, a PKK land-mine attack on a military convoy claimed the lives of six troops. Eight troops were also injured in the attack; one in a life-threatening condition. The military responded after the attack, sending F-16 warplanes to target a large group of terrorists in the Iraqi border region of Avasin-Basyan.
-- GIANT SHIP HITS MANSION IN ISTANBUL STRAIT A giant ship run aground on the Istanbul Strait, hitting a mansion owned by famous Turkish actress Oya Basar. No one was injured in the accident. The ship was carrying logs from the Bulgarian port city of Burgas to Istanbul.
VATAN -- "WE ARE OVERCOMING ECONOMIC CRISIS" Cem Boyner, executive director of Boyner Holding, said that Turkey has been overcoming the economic crisis gradually. The economic crisis also caused significant changes in the sector, he said. "Tenants, shopping center owners, suppliers fully support each other. We are on board the same ship. Everyone is very tolerant," Boyner said.
-- TREASONOUS ATTACK When Turkey has been taking steps to end terrorism, the terrorist organization PKK martyred six Turkish soldiers. When soldiers were on the way for an operation in Cukurca town of southeastern province of Hakkari, a land-mine detonated. Six soldiers were killed in the blast.
CUMHURIYET -- TERRORIST AMBUSH: 6 DEAD A remote-control land-mine went off in Cukurca town of the southeastern province of Hakkari as a military convoy was passing by. Six troops were killed and eight others were injured. One of the injured soldiers is in life-threatening condition.
-- NEW PROBLEM WITH US Tension may increase in the relations between Turkey and the United States after the Greek Cypriot administration allowed a U.S. firm to conduct oil and natural gas exploration off its southeastern shores. But five of the 13 regions determined by Greek Cypriots as continental shelf overlap Turkey's marine authority regions.
RADIKAL -- DTP LEADER CRITICIZES PKK'S ATTACK Democratic Society Party, or DTP, leader Ahmet Turk criticized PKK's latest attack in which six troops were killed. "Whoever wants a democratic solution, he should lay down weapons. This is the only condition to pave the way for politics," he said.
-- 72 NGOs EXTEND SUPPORT TO GUL President Abdullah Gul said that acts of terrorism constituted a major obstacle to efforts to increase the living standards of the region. Following the statement, 72 non-governmental organizations, or NGOs, extended their support to President Gul and called on everyone to contribute to the peace process.
YENI SAFAK -- "WE HAVE TO BE WELL-PREPARED FOR POST-ECONOMIC CRISIS" Akbank Executive Board Chairperson Suzan Sabanci Dincer said that everyone should be well-prepared for the post-economic crisis in order to preserve the benefits of Turkey. Dincer said that Turkey had several advantages and there was need for a sound cooperation in the business world.
