Swine flu vaccinations await final approval

Vaccinations for the H1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu, have arrived in all of Turkey’s 81 provinces after preliminary tests of the vaccine came back positive.

Widespread panic was meanwhile averted as a suspected second death from the flu was determined to have been caused by pneumonia.

Despite successful preliminary tests conducted by the Health Ministry’s Refik Saydam Hıfzıssıhha Center, the ministry has announced that the vaccination process will not begin unless a final positive report emerges from the National Reference Center.

Debate over the cause of death of a 28-year-old university student in the western province of Manisa dominated the country’s agenda Wednesday. The ministry had announced on its Web site Tuesday that university student Yusuf Demirtaş had died in Manisa two days after being hospitalized on suspicion of swine flu.

A sample of Demirtaş’ blood was sent to Istanbul for analysis. In a written statement Wednesday afternoon, the Health Ministry said the laboratory analysis showed the test results were negative for swine flu and positive for pneumonia.

Mustafa Güneş, a 29-year-old patient in Ankara, was Turkey’s first confirmed death from swine flu. Güneş, who worked at a hospital as a member of the cleaning staff, was admitted after being diagnosed with pneumonia and then testing positive for swine flu.

As the H1N1 virus spreads rapidly across the country, the Health Ministry is taking measures to prevent it from spreading further. Saying that the only way to effectively combat swine flu is through vaccinations, the ministry has announced that vaccinations in schools will begin the last week of November and continue until January 2010.

A recent statement from the Health Ministry said the vaccination of all health personnel will begin Nov. 2.

Health employees and pilgrims planning to make the hajj to Mecca will be given priority, the ministry added
